Windows Azure Integration Pack

Greetings!

Feel free to suggest stories and vote for the existing ones to help us determine what will go in the release of the Enterprise Library 5.0 Windows Azure Integration Pack.

Please note this list may not always represent the actual priority list for the patterns & practices development team. It also does not constitute any commitments.

There are at least 4 pages of stories. Make sure to review all of them.

  1. Application rationing (throttling)

As a developer, I want a mechanism to detect higher resource utilization and change modes of operation to utilize less resources. This will allow to deal with bursts in demand without provisioning additional instances.

  2. Instance auto-scaling: reactive: trends analysis

As an account owner, I want to be able to identify trends and specify auto-scaling criteria (rulesets) based on historic data. [Please be concrete with what kind of trends analysis and tools you'd like to have]

  3. Instance auto-scaling: scheduled

As a developer or app administrator, I want a provisioning mechanism to schedule the number of instances of each role for specific time periods. These instances should be spun off or torn down without user's intervention. [Please comment on the granularity of timing - per hour, per day, the day of the week etc.]

  4. Auto-scaling: notifications

As an administrator, I want to be able to receive scaling notifications. Notification settings should be customizable.

  5. Instance auto-scaling: reactive

As a developer or app administrator, I want a provisioning mechanism to specify rulesets/triggers to scale up/down the number of instances according to resource monitoring metrics. This mechanism should have hard boundaries to avoid unbudgeted expenses. [Please comment on what resource metrics matter to you - CPU utilization, bandwidth, # requests, queue length etc.]

  6. Hybrid auto-scaling (application and instance)

Action can be both instance and application scaling (e.g. when treshold X is reached, spin up to 5 new instances of worker roles and if that is not enough to deal with the burst, do application scale down to the next level/mode of operation.

  7. Auto-scaling: history

As an administrator or account owner, I want to be able to see the history of the number of instances and/or application modes of operation along with what triggered the specificscaling activities so that I could understand and minotor the compute hours and plan my resource usage.

  8. Auto-scaling: config: declarative

As an administrator, I want to have declarative configuration support for the rulesets and auto-scaling operations.

  9. Auto-scaling: resource optimization

As an administrator or account owner, I want the scaling-down decisions to be made with the consideration of the minimum unit of billing (for example, compute time hour). For example, do not scale down immediately before a paid hour of compute time is fully utilized.

  10. Auto-scaling extensibility

As a developer, I want to have extensibility hooks to be able to plug in new metric gathering and analysis logic components.

  11. Auto-scaling: reactive: approval workflow

As an administrator or account owner, I want to receive a request for auto-scaling when the conditions are met, that I can approve or deny in a specified timeframe (by e-mail or with a tool), and if no answer to the request is done in time, a specified default action will be used.
